7. Freedom, Love, Courage, Hope, Good, Evil

What do you think this play reveals about our need for freedom? About the power of love? About courage and hope? About good and evil? In your answers, consider how the play’s themes relate to the themes of another work, such as The Taming of the Shrew.

I think this play reveals about our need for freedom because it shows us what it would be like in hiding. How dreadful and stressing it is. Such as for Anne, with no freedom in how she has to act, most of the time quietly, it shows how stressed and blocked she felt. Normally a hyper loud girl had to become quiet. With no freedom it shows how people would have to live, in order to live close to being free. The Franks, Van Daans, and Dussel were in hiding, which showed how they lived under the rule of the Nazis. We need freedom, freedom is how we are able to be ourselves.

This also reveals the power of love in such persecution of being trapped in a room, and also between the family relationships. Whenever they had problems, Anne turned to her family. Especially to her dad. They all stayed loyal to each other and especially Mr. Frank. He showed love to even the Van Daans and Dussel. He was courageous and loyal to the family even through hard times. Even though they get caught in the end, they were able to stay together as a family through love.

This reveals courage and hope because while they are in hiding, they hope and have courage that they can surivve and that they will get through the hard times. Even though there are people who hate them and ALLL the Jews, Anne has hope that there are people who still have good in their heart. Such a hard thing to believe in, even through all the trouble. Anne had courage also because she faced what was to come ahead.

In this I can't really explain or talk about the good and evil. That the Nazis were evil? And that the Jews were good? No, but I can tell that everybody in hiding was brave enough and good enough to face the evil. That they were good enough to cooperate with each other during hiding. I'm not sure about Dussel though. But still. They were good, I guess.

6. The Holocaust Documentaries

Why are there so many books, movies, documentaries, etc. about the Holocaust? Why do we keep retelling this story?

I think there are so many books, movies, documentaries and all the sorts of the Holocaust because there was never such a mass massacre of people. There were never such hate to kill so many. Over millions or maybe BILLIONS died! They used the strangest ways to kill the people. I think there are also so many because the Holocaust was an event that affected us all. That we people in human nature, can be brainwashed and do horrible things, which may feel like nothing. The German Nazis say that after killing a Jew they felt nothing bad. I believe we keep retelling this story because through all the survivors, liberators, and victims of the Holocaust, it shows how it was to live in fear, in hiding through such terror and threat. I can't really tell because I have never seen such horror in my life for real. I am thankful for how alive I am now. These stories affect me for my thankfulness.

5f. Hannukah Celebration Interupption! (rhymes =_=)

Describe how the Hannukah Celebration in scene 5 is interuppted. What does Peter do to make matters worse. According to Dussel, how will incident lead to their discovery by the police?

While Anne was giving out the presents to everyone, everyone laughed and enjoyed what she was doing. She really has changed from the past. But Dussel and Peter weren't on very good relationship. Peter hated him for Dusssel's arrogance. When Anne gave Peter's present, a razor, Dussel mocked him by saying that his cat can do that for him. Peter got annoyed but just went towards his room. But when he went towards his room Dussel mocked him again that he wanted to try using it. When Peter came back out, he made it worse by pretending he had the cat with him. So Dussel started coughing and saying to take it out, but it was just a bath towel. Mr. Van Daan got mad at him and decided to rid the cat, but Anne supported Peter and his cat.

Dussel started saying that the cat will show the police where they are and that they will all get caught. He says that the thief will tell them where they are if he gets caught through a bargain with the Police.

I hate Dussel too. If the Dussel in the movie is him, i really hate him. Strange Old Man! He doesn't have any understanding! He only cares for himself! "My allergies! AHH" Whatever, old man. He is a very negative thinker and he has no point in what he says, why does he say all his trash, whats the point?!? That they will die? What is wrong with him. Very foolish and dumb old man.

5e. Tensions

How do the events following Anne's Nightmare reveal tensions between Anne and two members of the household? After Anne's horrible nightmare, she was terrified and woke up staring into space with fear. Mr. Dussel came in rushing and hissing at her to be quiet. That they'll get killed and found out that they were here. Anne hates him and the family gets rid of Anne's sight. Her mom came to her and tried calming and cheering her up. And just when she tried kissing her when she laid back down, Anne rejected the kiss. So her relationship between mother became filled with tension for Anne, but for her mother, Mother was sad and filled with sorrow thinking that Anne had abandoned her. Her relationship between Father increased but her father wanted her to have a nice relationship with Mother too. She was scared and proposed to father that he was the only man she loved.
I think Anne is just in her problem ages. I don't really know when that was to me, maybe i didn't have it yet, but I think she is in the "problem age" that many people say. It is pretty dramatic, and tells us about her most emotional times of her life.

5a. Freedom of Mind

"But always remember this, Anneke. There are no walls, there are no bolts, no locks, that anyone can put on your mind." This is really touching and true. Man, I wish I would believe in this more therally, because then what other people think about me wouldn't affect me as much. The pressure wouldn't build on me. "No locks, no bolts." I think this means that whatever we do, our mind is always free, and that nothing can let us part from it, except for death. I really agree with this, because we make our own choices, our own PURE choices, that usually come out dirty and messed up. There are medicines that can cage our mind, more like drugs, but we can choose not to eat them. The mind is free and we can think whatever we want. I agree with this statement entirely.

4a. Foreshadowing

Why does Mr. Frank breakdown when he see the gloves? He breaks down because it reminds him of all the memories that he had with his family, the Van Daans, and maybe Dussel. He says that he has to move or get out because the place is too filled with memories. And later he picks up Anne's diary from Miep and he starts reading. He would be reading her diary because she isn't there which makes it so bad for him, his dead daughter. Through this breakdown and scene I am able to tell that many bad things happen to Mr. Franks's family and his comrades, and that it gives him all the bad memories. That Anne and everyone else will not survive. Mr. Franks sadness shows it.
